Area V History

The primary foci of Area V Chapters are reflected in our National Theme: TLOD, Impacting our Future through Positive Interventions on the Lives of our Youth, our Community, and our Legacy with Effective Volunteerism. We mentor youth and provide community service to enrich the lives of those who live among us. Our inspiration is Lady Ozell Dean, our Founder, who had a vision of helping youth and connecting to community projects that provide services to all mankind by beautifying lives. Moreover, Area V has TLOD Ladies holding national office or are standing committee chairmen.

The history of Area V had its beginning in Cincinnati, Ohio. Lady Ange McCleod was the organizer. The Cincinnati Chapter was the first chapter chartered in Area V. It was organized in 1968, four years after the founding of the organization. Cincinnati was the second Chapter chartered outside the state of Texas and Columbus Chapter was the third. The first National Syn-Lod was held June 20-22, 1969 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Syn-Lod has been held in Columbus, Ohio, June 1977; Dayton, Ohio, June 1981; Detroit, Michigan, June 1990 and Columbus, Ohio, June 1997.

The fourth National President Lady Vivian Crawley (1979-1983) was a member of the Cincinnati Chapter. Lady Crawley’s national theme was “TLOD Shapers of Change, A Continuing Commitment. ”Her program rendered service to Youth and Adults and promoted community activities to achieve needed social change.

Throughout the years, the membership has participated in many unique programs. Area V has embraced a group of aspiring young Teens, many of whom have progressed to leading positions within their communities. The Top Ladies delight in mentoring and working with our Top Teens and facilitating their quest for educational excellence.

Recognized for their intellectual, charismatic and exceptional leadership skills, the following Area Directors have led the states of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, and Western Pennsylvania in the accomplishment of successful programs which have benefitted Youth and Adults in their respective geographic locations.
